Crashing Waves

Ok... I see so many people doing that thing where there is silky looking water and I do love it and wanted to try it for so long... well, this is my attempt... you may pick it to pieces and tell me what I did wrong or right... it was actually fun doing this... since I went out on a limb and 'experimented' on the Manuel settings... stepping away from the safety net here...

Yes, I know that some of the photos are 'big' but I seem to have so much on my plate of doing stuff I wasn't going to mess around with making them smaller...

Well, after having finding out today they are finally up to our month in the adoption and basically 3 days from our date... so, if things go the way they are now... we could hear something by January/February 2010... fingers crossed things keep going smoothly the way they are. Our agency is even sending us papers to get ready for our call... quiet exciting... like I said... our fingers are crossed all keeps going well.

Nothing wrong with this. I'm trying to do the same thing, but want the water even more "silky". I would have had the ISO as low as possible to ensure a longer exposure. I have also bought a neutral density filter to try and get the effect (yesterday's sunset was taken with the filter on), but I still haven't been able to get exactly what I want.

I know how to do it , I just can't remember the exact details without going and looking them up. It looks like rapids it's so frantic.

@lisa v: Actually, it was taken down at Sebastian Inlet, which is down the road from me and it is the waves crashing against the rocks...

It's a good attempt. For more silky effect you need more time of exposition. ISO 100 better than 400 and priority to the speed more than diaphragme. The best is to try different combinations of both. You will get it.

yes, longer exposure for the more 'silky' effect - like many of the incredible shots by pedro alexandre http://cuchulainn.aminus3.com/ but at same time i really like yours as it has an interesting 'choppy' effect we don't normally see. i've been meaning to try a few myself - but the water will soon be frozen in these parts and i won't need the long exposure!

@djedfre: Thank you... thank you for the laugh you gave me today which I really needed... when you said that you wanted to try doing this but had to wait cause of the water being frozen and you won't need long exposure... I haven't laughed so much in a long time... doesn't take much to amuse me... hahaha

Very beautiful dynamic photograph thanks to your choices of catch of sight (Iso 400, to perhaps collect the hot light on the rocks), in more framing is of quality, on the whole a beautiful photograph ;)

I love it!

The water seems to have lots of energy, something which is sometimes lost on the longer exposures.

I'm not so sure there is wrong and right anyway, just different.

Nice long exposure.Take your time when trying this out and have a good play with ISO and shutter speed.I think every camera should have a built in feature that only lets you use manual on it for the first few months !!
I used manual SLR´s for a good 15 years before I had one with an automatic setting,it can only help your skills .

@Anthony Lambert: I have an old 35mm camera with a few lenses etc I got at an auction for $40... I am hoping it works but with all the stuff I have learnt from the digital, I am going to try it out on the this camera... really stepping out on a limb now...

Everyone's said it already ... you got the rocks' light and the 'softened' water going every which way, and did it well. I'm a naturalist when it comes to water and usually prefer it with the motion stopped, but there is that pretty silky quality when it is slowed. Good for you for experimenting with your settings!

Excellent result on your experiment! Remember too that the lower the light the better results you can get along with the long exposure time and small aperture settings (as in high Fstop settings... F22 and higher). Love this shot!

@amy: Thanks... I am trying to remember all that everyone has suggested... I have never been one to have things 'sink' into my head so this photography/settings thing is like school... I am the type to practice as I go... I pick things up that way... but... gotta get out of my comfort zone... thanks again...

it's great!!! and different from the usual long exposure water shots because the water has quite sharp form. i really like it! well done!

Perfect.... this is the right speed for this shot whereby a sense of dynamic movement is present. In other examples, such as a wide beach or woodland stream you could go for that silky smooth effect. Tripod, long exposure, small aperture, and maybe a filter are the requirements.

I like this, it has impact crashing.

Pretty terrific for a first try, if you ask me. I see you've gotten some advice, so I won't add any. I like a variety of water effects -- silky is good also, but this has a look of explosive movement and I think it's wonderful.

@Bookfool: Tons of advice and try to remember it all so that I can try them all out... funny though, the picture turned out that the water looked 'fiercer' then what it really was... still, I was proud of it...

I prefer yours to the super silky shots - they're a little dull. This conveys the power and unpredictability of the water.
